Balance
1007 words on Monday, 1092 yesterday. So far the fifteen minute sprints are doing the trick! It’s been easier to get myself to sit down and write in the evening when I can say “Just fifteen minutes, it’s only fifteen minutes, you can do that much…”
There have been a few posts on various blogs lately (and even a comic strip) about internet addiction, and its consequences for writing. Aside from the fact that surfing the web and twittering takes time that could be spent writing, a few people have also said that they’ve found it reduces their creativity. One person changed her schedule so that she did her writing before her emails and blogs and everything else. Other people have simply cut down.
The problem, of course, is that these days online presence really is important for authors. It’s a very individual balance of how much and when, which is very easy to lose control of. In the last couple months I’ve cut down on the webcomics I read, and pruned out a few blogs too. I think I’m doing pretty good. It doesn’t take me a ton of time to keep up each day. But it’s definitely something to keep an eye on.
I might try going internet-less this weekend to see if it makes a difference with my writing. Maybe.
