Twittering Iran

15 June, 2009 (11:09) | Non-Writing | By: Andrea

I hit my goal for over 3000 words over the weekend. I’m getting back into the rhythm. I finished a major section toward the end, and decided that was as far as I could go without re-writing the beginning. I can’t tie the threads together at the end if I don’t know what they are. I have the major stuff plotted out, but things always pop up unexpectedly when I do the actual writing. So, back to the beginning it is. Oy.

A non-writing related subject. I’ve been on Twitter for a while now. I’ve enjoyed the bits of news, information, humor etc. that you get when you follow the right people. But it wasn’t until yesterday that I really appreciated all it can do.

I started following three people yesterday after seeing them referenced in other people’s tweets about the post-election protests in Iran. One is an ABC reporter and one is a student. I don’t know who the other one is, but he (or they, there’s a group) provides a lot of info. It’s fascinating, and heartwrenching, to see their comments in real time.

Five years ago I couldn’t have seen this. They couldn’t have shared this. Yes, reporters could have gotten word out somehow no matter what the government did, but now ordinary people have the power to share so much more. It still amazes me.
