Back to Work

Well, my week of vacation is over. I had great plans for writing productively.

Ha.

I do have excuses, of course. Three days were spent camping on Orcas Island, and I never expected to get much done there. Then there was getting the Kid ready to get on a plane yesterday for her three-week trip. But I did quite a bit less than I could have. So I’ve had a vacation from writing as well as work, and now it’s back on the wagon for me. I need to take advantage of the extra time while the Kid is gone. Even though I’ll have to put in some overtime at work this month too. And even though I’ll be tempted to use the alone-time to relax. Willpower, don’t fail me now.

I’ve started researching the American and Sicilian Mafia for some details I might be able to use. It’s quite interesting already, and I’ve barely started. I can’t let myself get too involved in research, though. That, along with re-thinking plot and details, is the first thing I slip into when the writing isn’t going well. It also triggers my obsessive tendencies: I’ll end up staying awake reading and searching until way too late, or while I really should be doing something else.

Writing has to come first. Always.
